The untapped treasure of Central Africa. Bourbon off the volcano.
ScrollThe same Lake Kivu that makes Rwanda famous, worked from the western shore. Volcanic soil off Nyiragongo, thousands of smallholders, cooperatives holding the quality line in a hard place.
Rift volcanics, deep water, high ground. North Kivu runs high-acid and aromatic: lemon, blackberry, chocolate and spice, with the white-flower lift of true Bourbon. The southern lake lots come softer and creamier, strawberry and honey and nut. Ituri, isolated to the north, grows slow and intense.
Robusta is native to this basin. The world's commercial Robusta traces back to wild Congo plants. Arabica came later under Belgian cultivation, and specialty is only now finding a foothold, against real odds. Rare on any offer list. That is the point.
Full body, rich and layered. Earth and dark chocolate, fruit and spice, a long clean finish. Bold, sought after, still mostly secret.
